Match report round up

U16 Leinster championship Kildare 3-11 Longford 3-5

By Donal Fitzpatrick

On a windy afternoon in St. Laurences, Kildare u16s played Longford in the Leinster championship. Longford won the toss and played with the wind in 1st half. Kerri Harmon opened Longfords account by scoring a goal and a point. Kildare hit back with 2 fine points from Ellen Dowling and Niamh Mulhall. The strong wind had an effect on Kildare keeper Rochelle Kanes kick outs as it was not allowing her get any distance from them. As a result it put pressure on the Kildare back line of Laura Hannon, Emma Lyons, Grainne Lyons, Orla Moran and Sarah O’ Neill. Luckily for Kildare, Longford didn’t have their scoring boots on and kicked a total of 10 wides in 1st half. Longfords Claire Farrell and Ellie Collum added 2 more scores to increase their lead. Kildares midfield of Tara Hallinan and Chanice Corcoran linked up with their forwards well and as a result Ellen Dowling scored a lovely point followed by a goal from Rebecca Houlihane who slotted the ball passed Longfords keeper Shannon Woods. This levelled matters and the half time score was Kildare 1.03 Longford 1.03. Kildare started the 2nd half at a blistering pace and this time it was Longford to be on the receiving end of some great play by Kildare forwards. Winning the ball from Longfords keepers kick outs, Shauna Kendrick scored 1.01, Ellen Dowling scored 3 pts and Mikaela Mckenna scored 2 pts putting the Kildare girls into a commanding lead. Longford to their credit never gave up the fight, they moved the ball well up the pitch and Clair Farrell scored a lovely point to reduce the deficit. After another Longford attack they were awarded a penalty after a foul by a Kildare player for a push in the back. Kerri Harmon stepped up to take the spot kick but unfortunately for her she got too much under the ball and blasted it over the bar for a point. Straight from the kick out, Eimear Heaney won the ball and drove at the Kildare goal slotting the ball passed the out-stretched hand of Rochelle Kane. Kildare got back to grips on the game and went on to score 1.01 from Mckenna. Longfords last score came from the boot of Harmon after a mix up in Kildares defence. The ball somehow managed to squeeze between the keeper and the post. Kildare held on to record a 6 pt win. Best for Kildare were Grainne Lyons, Ellen Dowling, Mikaela Mckenna, Rebecca Houlihane, Shauna Kendrick and Niamh Mulhall. Special mention to Longfords keeper Shannon Woods, she kept her team in this game and pulled off some great saves.

Senior league
Division 2 Naas 3-11 Sarsfields 2-9
Naas continued their unbeaten start to the league with a hard fought win over local rivals in heavy conditions following a number of downpours in Naas on Tuesday. Both teams welcomed back a few of their regulars into their squads and served up an entertaining game for all to see. Early exchanges were tight as both teams tried for openings but it was the visitors who opened the scoring with a point from Roisin Byrne after good work from Elaine Dillon. At this stage it was the visitors who were dominating exchanges with Clare Fox driving them forward and who would have guessed this would be the only time they would lead. Naas began to get to the pace of the game and when Roisin Mellett won the ball in midfield she released a long ball into Aine Cummins who was unmarked and despite a great save from Jessica Whelan the ball broke free to Aine again and she made no mistake the second time to crash the ball to the net. Sarsfields responded immediately and it was Elaine Dillon who was on hand to score Sarsfields second point.  In typical fashion on how this game will go for the evening Naas then showed their spirit as a ball won by Aoife Trant played a ball to Shannon Doheny who carried the ball twenty meters before a quick one two with Aine Cummins before Shannon added the point. Sarsfields didn’t head the warning and soon all present witnessed the score of the match when Rachel Corrigan intercepted a long ball, towards Roisin Byrne, she transferred to Caroline Hill who found the speedy Shannon Doheny whose quick pass found Aine Cummins free and she crashed the ball to the back of the net for a second time.  Mid way through the first half and with the home team up by five points Sarsfields came back up the field and a long ball from Jessica Turner into the Naas area deceived all and ended up in the net. Naas then responded and some good interaction between Caroline Hill and Chloe Campbell released Sarah Callinan who beat Eimear Dempsey to the ball and added a point. The next attack was set up by the tireless Roisin Byrne who was fouled and Jessica Turner added the point from the resulting free. Elaine Dillion reduced the deficit to a single point when Elaine Hannon found her free on the right. The remaining five minutes of the first half saw Naas add four unanswered points from Sarah Callinan, Aoife Caufield, Shannon Doheny and Caroline Hill. Half time Naas 2:6 Sarsfields 1:4. Naas opened the second half brightly and continued their assault on the visitor’s goal, Aine Cummins and Shannon Doheny continued to torment their markers and it was the latter that opened the second half scoring with a point. Naas owned the ball for the next five minutes but wasted a number of opportunities before another break resulted in Chloe Campbell being fouled and Sarah Callinan added another point from the twenty meter line. Sarsfields called on their experience to work the ball down the field and when Caoimhe McConnell was fouled, Elaine Dillon raised another white flag. The game swung back to the home team and when Kim Turner was yellow carded for two heavy tackles in quick succession Sarah Callinan added a point from the free. Naas introduced Fiona Trant and Briona Hoban for Chloe Campbell and the tiring Aine Cummins. These changes were rewarded when Briona was on hand to add a point following some great defending from Niamh Hederman and Hilary Piggott.  Again Sarsfields came back up the field and it was county star Roisin Byrne was the catalyst for their fight back with two excellent taken points. Naas again worked the bell forward and again Sarah Callinan was on hand to point another free. Five minutes remaining and Sarsfields were back down the field again and when Emma Hannon was pulled back, Roisin Byrne scored a wonderful point from thirty meters on the wrong side of the pitch for a right footed player. The effort was telling on the Naas and the experience of the Sarsfields team was beginning to pull them back into the game. A loose pass in the Naas defence was pounced on by Rosin Byrne and she soon crashed the ball low past Aoife Hederman in the Naas goal to leave just three points between them. The next attack was going to be vital in determining the winner and so it proved when again Rachel Corrigan’s determination drove her forward to win a ball between two Sarsfields players and she passed to Caroline Hill who sprinted forward and beat the Sarsfields defence with a great shot and goal to secure the win for the home team. It was fitting that Sarsfields ended the scoring when again Roisin Byrne was on hand to pop over the final score of the night to leave the final score Naas 3:11 Sarsfields 2:8.
Well done to both teams in serving up such an entertaining game, Sarsfields were well served by Clare Fox especially in the first half, Elaine Dillon and the engine of the team Rosin Byrne. On the night Naas had plenty of stars, Aine Cummins was unstoppable in the first half, some great defending by Aoife Trant, Rachel Corrigan and the star of the night was Shannon Doheny.
Teams: Naas - Aoife Hederman, Hilary Piggott, Niamh Hederman, Sarah O’Hanlon, Rachel Corrigan, Aoife Trant, Mairead Murphy, Roisin Mellett, Caroline Hill (1:1), Shannon Doheny( 1:2), Aoife Caufield( 0:1), Leanne O’Rourke, Aine Cummins (1:1), (Briona Hoban  45mins 0:1), Sarah Callinan (0:5), Chloe Campbell (Fiona Trant 40 mins).

Division 3 Clane 2-11 Kilcullen 7-12
Kilcullen Ladies bounced back from a couple of disappointing defeats in their opening 2 games, to put in a brilliant and clinical performance away to Clane. The game was played as 13-a-side which really suited the Kilcullen forwards who flourished in the open spaces of a Clane pitch that was in brilliant condition considering the recent bad weather.   The first half was real end to end stuff, with Laura Gibson finding the net twice for the Ragettes, while at the other end Aoife Molyneaux pulled off a stunning save at the other end to deny Clane a goal of their own. This meant the Ragettes took a deserved 2-6 to 0-5 half-time lead. Clane came back strongly into the game in the first 10 minutes of the second half, and closed the gap to 4 points with Kilcullen leading by 2-10 to 1-9. However, after that the visitors attack took over. Ciara Pembroke put the Ragettes 7 points clear with a brilliantly taken goal, and Kilcullen never looked back from there.  Ciara went on to complete a hat-trick, while Laura Gibson scored another 2 goals.  Clare Kelly, Kayleigh Cogan and Jayne Peacocke all got some excellent scores too as the Ragettes went on to win by an amazing 7-12 to 2-11. It's hard to pick anyone out as best players as all 13 girls worked so hard for each other and played well, but Clare Mulrennan was oustanding in defence, Aoibheann Smyth worked tirelessly in midfield, while Ciara Pembroke and Laura Gibson were in lethal form in attack. Kilcullen Line-Up:  A.Molyneaux;  C.Mulrennan, K.Bell;  C.Kelly(capt), S.Maher, E.Vaughan;  C.Kelly(0-2), A.Smyth;  C.Pembroke(3-1), D.Smyth, K.Cogan(0-3);  J.Peacocke(0-4,2f), L.Gibson(4-2).

Division 3 Kilcock 2-14 Na Fianna: 2-4
The Kilcock Senior Ladies football team made it back to back league wins on Tuesday night last, the 24th of April, with a comprehensive ten point victory over Na Fianna in Kicock GAA. To say it was comprehensive though is probably being a bit kind to the hosts, who had to wait until the second half before they could stamp their authority on the game, while also been a bit unfair to the visitors who looked the better side in a tight first half. Kilcock manager Shane Stone had to make one change to the starting fifteen from the round one defeat of Kilcullen, with the injured Paige Byrne been replaced by the experienced Mary Tighe. Na Fianna for their part looked a well disciplined side and took to the field in large numbers for their warm up, well before the hosts. Though that may seem like a small factor, it reaped dividends for the Allenwood girls as they were the faster team out of the blocks and took the lead after only two minutes when their full forward Tara Higgins kicked a fine point from thirty yards. Kilcock took time to settle but got off the mark after some quick thinking from free-taker Grace White, who took the Na Fianna defence by surprise and played her first set piece short to Louise Keane who turned and slotted over from close range. White raised the white flag twice more in quick succession, one from a free and the other after her shot crashed off the crossbar and luckily bounced over. Kilcock were scrappy though and not their usual fluent selves, with many passes going astray all over the pitch. Na Fianna took advantage of this and scored their opening goal, after a bad mix up in the home defence handed their corner forward Chloe Smullen the easy task to blast home to an empty net. Kilcock were struggling at this stage and could not get out of their defence and were lucky not to concede a bizarre own goal when corner back Fiona Campion nearly put through her own net after a break down in communication with goalie Eimear Kelly. Na Fianna added another point, again from Higgins, before Kilcock enjoyed a purple patch of their own with Emma Robinson fisting a point and White getting a goal, when a point was on her mind, with what was her only ''bad'' free of the night which dropped short but was missed by the goalie and sneaked under the bar and into the net. They say though that you are at your most vulnerable just after scoring and this was the case for Kilcock, who let their opponents work the ball the full length of the field to score their second goal through midfielder Rebecca Donoghue. White levelled up just before the break with another free, this time raising the white flag. Kilcock trudged off the field at half time looking an unhappy team even though the sides were level at Kilcock 1:05 Na Fianna 2:02. But this was a good sign as it showed where this team has come and they no longer settle for the silly mistakes that were been made by the whole side throughout the first half. Stone himself looked none to happy but whatever he said to them at the interval would change the whole pattern of this contest. The new look midfield partnership of underage county stars Aisling O'Connor and Caoimhe Fagan, that looked lethargic in the opening half, showed they meant business right from the throw in of the second half when O'Connor tapped down to Fagan and from there the latter cut a path to goal and kicked a fine point to put the ladies from Branganstown into the lead, a lead they would not surrender for the duration of the game, Only extend. The accurate Louise Keane pointed almost straight away after some good work from fellow forwards Shanon Byrne and Emma Robinson. The next ten minutes were to become the Grace White show as she struck four unanswered points, (three frees) to put the girls in green and gold six points ahead. Then came the score that put the contest beyond any doubt, captain Shona Cagney started the move and fed centre forward Sheena Byrne who's shot rattled the crossbar only to fall into the waiting arms of Robinson, who calmly finished the ball to the net. Na Fianna did try and rally a bit and hit two points without reply, through Micaela McKenna and Smullen, before White, O'Connor and Fagan finished the scoring for the night with three well taken points to make the score Kilcock 2-14 Na Fianna 2-4. Stone rang the changes in the last few minutes, giving some of the younger panel members some valuable game-time experience. For the home side, goalie Eimear Kelly recovered well from the concession of two soft first half goals and pulled off a top drawer safe in the second period. The defence did not have its greatest night and struggled at times when Na Fianna were on top. Their passing out of defence will need to improve in the coming weeks but they did enjoy a better second half with Mary Tighe, Shona and Orla Cagney to the fore, with the latter moved to wing back to deal with the dangerous Na Fianna wing forward Micaela McKenna. In the middle of the park, O'Connor and Fagan grew into the game and dominated that sector of the field in the second half, while also contributing to the score board with some well taken points. All the forwards worked well, even when the chips were down, with Sheena Byrne carrying the ball well and laying the it off to girls in better positions to set up scores at crucial times. She seems to be revelling in her new position on the forty, with young Emma Maguire working non stop beside her, showing experience well beyond her years. Shanon Byrne, Emma Robinson and Louise Keane won their fair share of ball in the full forward line and took their scores when needed. But once again Grace White top scored, this time with 1:08 to her name as she pulled the strings in the forward line throughout. For Na Fianna, Tara Higgins and Chloe Smullen were a constant threat in the full forward line while Rebecca Donoghue can be happy with her display in midfield. Once again though they relied too much on star player Mikaela McKenna to try and make things happen and though she had a great first half, her second half was hampered after receiving a nasty bang to the head. The ten point win flatters Kilcock and Stone knows that improvements must be made and mistakes must be cut out if they are to keep up their 100% record away to Robert Emmets next week. Stone also knows though that his side will need to perform in both halves, something they have failed to do so far this year but the year is young and so is his team, and with some encouragement and positivity around this group of girls they can continue their winning ways. Kilcock Scorers- Grace White 1-8, Emma Robinson 1-1, Louise Keane 0-2, Caoimhe Fagan 0-2, Aisling O'Connor 0-1. Na Fianna Scorers - Chloe Smullen 1-1, Rebecca Donoghue 1-0, Tara Higgins 0-2, Micaela McKenna 0-1.

Division 5 Prosperous 4-5 Castledermot 5-11
Castledermot made it three wins from three against a never give up Prosperous side. The opening stages of the game was slow to get going but it was the visitors that got the opening score through Michaela Nolan and by half time Castledermot had put a 3 point gap between the sides. Knowing that they werent playing to their potential, Castledermot went on a scoring spree in the second half clocking up 4-7 following three quick goals scored by Prosperous in the opening stages of the second half. Best for Castledermot on the night were Michaela Nolan scoring an impressive 2-8, Shauna Doyle and Kim Kirwan. Scores came from Michaela Nolan 2-8, Shauna Doyle 1-1, Leah Byrne 1-0, Alesi Horan 1-0, Betsy 0-1, Louise Kirwan 0-1.

U14 championship
Division 4 Athy 5-3 Rathcoffey 1-4
Athy played host to Rathcoffey in round 3 of the U14 championship & it was the home side who secured the points. The 1st half was very closely contested with both sides registering good scores but it was Athy who led by at the half time mark.  Goals from Aibhlis Fleming & Rebecca Coughlan saw the home time lead 2-02 to 1-02 at half time. Athy held Rathcoffey to 2 points in the 2nd half with outstanding defensive displays from Caoimhe O'Rourke & Aoife Whelan. Athy went on to secure the points with 2 more goals from Eibhlis Fleming and then a late goal from Clodagh Mulhall. There were many excellent performances for Athy including that of Ailbhe King, who sustained a facial injury but bravely rejoined the side to see her team win out on a final scoreline of 5-03 to 1-04.

Division 3 Naas 3-12 Two Mile House 2-3
This third round match started in lively fashion in spite of the wet conditions. Naas opened the scoring with a goal from wing forward Molly Ryan; resulting from some fine passing movements among the Naas forwards. Two Mile House promptly replied with  a point while Niamh Bergin at midfield combined well with her half forwards to secure another point and Ciara Breslin at centre forward added a further point to extend the Naas lead. Two Mile House continued to contest every ball and were rewarded with a goal on the stroke of half time. Naas had opportunities to stretch their lead but narrowly missed on a few occasions. The teams were on equal terms at  1-3 each  at half time; after a  most exciting first half. Naas found their shooting boots in the second half and extended their lead courtesy of an early goal from Miriam Corrigan full forward as the centre field partnership of Niamh Bergin and Kate Coffey worked determinedly and distributed the ball to their forwards who utilised it very well resulting in further scores from Eve O Callaghan, Ciara Breslin, Sarah Kelly, Amy Carberry  Niamh Bergin and Kate Coffey. All the Naas forwards worked very well as a unit namely Mary Creaton who won a lot of breaking ball while   Laura Owens and Georgia Mc Holmes  keenly  competed and contributed to all the scores. Two Mile House battled very well and were awarded a penalty near the end of the game and they showed great spirit throughout the encounter .Naas were well served by a solid defence with Georgina Kelly in goals ably assisted by the ever diligent full back Grace Mc Entagart and the lively corner backs Kelly Perkins and Aoife Shaw. Amy Jones was her vigilant self in the half back line working hard as was the centre back Alison Walsh who all combined to produce a supreme team effort on the night Two Mile House also played very well as a unit particularly Tara Breen and Rachael Collins. Both teams contributed to a most entertaining match and should be very proud of their efforts on behalf of their respective clubs. Scorers: Naas Ciara Breslin 1-3, Molly Ryan 1-1, Miriam Corrigan 1-0, Niamh Bergin 0-3, Amy Carberry 0-2 Eve O Callaghan 0-1, Kate Coffey 0-1, Sarah Kelly 0-1

The training session will provide information about alcohol and drugs, identify current trends in drug use and current service provision for young people. Training will also allow volunteers to consider how to manage alcohol or drug related incidents in line with GAA Policy and best practise. The event will be of use to Club ASAP Officers and to any volunteers working with young people directly in your club.

This training will be held in the Foróige Office, Unit 3, Block 5, Monread Leisure & Commercial Centre, Monread Road, Naas, Co. Kildare and will be attended by the ASAP National Coordinator. (Directions will be forwarded upon confirmation of your place at the event.)

Ladies Division 3: Kilcock v Kilcullen

Kilcock 1:20 Kilcullen 1:07
The Kilcock Ladies senior football team started their league campaign with a bang as they brushed aside the challenge of the visitors Kilcullen by thirteen points at Kilcock GAA on Tuesday night, April 10th. With a relatively new look panel, if not starting fifteen, the large crowd in attendance were unsure what to expect from manager Shane Stone's side but what they got was an exhibition of point taking that no supporter or player would expect at this time of year. In fact this reporter likes nothing better than seeing the white flag raised and while some people may say that goals win you games, I always say ''that one point takes two to beat it'' and I take my hat off to this bunch of girls for last night's performance. I will be honest I feared for them last night, not because I doubted their footballing ability but because they didn't look like a team that was going to savage their opponents. Their warm up lacked intensity, they laughed and chatted among themselves and I felt for their manager, they ran for the cover of the trees at the sniff of a small shower and they looked like a beaten team before the start.... But I apologise, How wrong was I? When the referee finally showed up and the game got under way twenty minutes behind schedule, the Kilcock team that I stood under the trees with, that messed about in the warm up, had gone home. A new team had arrived and they meant business right from the off. While a lot of praise was heaped on the forwards in the aftermath of this game, some stout defending in the early stages from Paige Byrne, Linda Byrne and Fiona Campion kept a dangerous Kilcullen attack at bay, while captain Shona Cagney pushed forward at any given opportunity on the overlap. In fact it was her sister Orla Cagney that got Kilcock's only goal of the game with only a few minutes on the clock as she calmly slotted home from close range following a well worked hand passing move involving a half a dozen players. Argentina scored a goal like it a few years ago after twenty six consecutive passes before Cambiasso finished it off. They still talk about that to this day, well Orla Cagney and Kilcock take a bow, it was special!! This goal was to be rare as then the points took over, with Emma Robinson and Grace White to the fore. The former must get a mention for her quick thinking in fist-passing a couple of points over the bar. After Louise Keane got her name on the score sheet, Kilcock were 1:03 to a goal to the good, with the concession of the goal been the only blemish on an excellent start. The Kilcock defence were caught too far forward and after goalie Eimear Kelly saved an initial effort, their full-forward pounced on the rebound and put the ball into the empty net. But that was as good as it got for the visitors in the opening half and from there the girls in green and gold kicked on with points from Grace White (2), Emma Robinson, Shanon Byrne, Shona Cagney, Sheena Byrne and midfielders Caoimhe Fagan (2) and Aisling O'Connor (2), to make the half-time score Kilcock 1:13 - Kilcullen 1:00
Complacency at this stage was the only thing that was going to beat Stone's charges and he kept them on their toes during the interval but Kilcullen were always going to come at them early in the second half and have a purple patch. And Kilcock were going to have to deal with this without the impressive Paige Byrne, who had to withdraw due to a back injury, she was replaced by another up and coming star in Laura Ward, making her competitive debut for the senior team at half back. As the night began to close in, so did the girls in black and white with three unanswered points early on in the second period but a Sheena Byrne point settled Kilcock's nerves a bit and helped them once again kick on and dominate. Fagan and Robinson added two more in between points for Kilcullen and as Kilcock began to ring the changes, the game lost a bit of its shape. Young Emma Maguire was very unlucky to be sin-binned near the end when some of the away side could have followed her to the line as their frustration grew. Grace White grabbed herself another point before Robinson and Shona Cagney capped off a wonderful display from Kilcock. Linda Byrne kept the dangerous Peacock quiet throughout while Fiona Campion showed plenty of energy getting forward from corner back. Shona Cagney put in her usual business like performance while the new look midfield pairing of Caoimhe Fagan and Aisling O'Connor dominated throughout and made sure everything went through them. All six forwards performed to their maximum with full-forward Robinson particularly impressive. Stone has a big squad and while some girls can feel aggrieved not to start, the year is long and their chance will come and those that did enter the fray did not weaken the team one bit and players such as Noelle Conlon and Mary Tighe would walk onto any team around the county. Players and supporters may have been apprehensive about Kilcock's chances for the coming year after losing some players from last year's championship winning team. But after last night's showing and the bulk of the victorious minor winning team joining the panel, those worries were put to bed.

Ladies football club match reports

Senior league reports

Division 1 Confey 5-11 Eadestown 2-9

Confey got their Senior League campaign away to an excellent start on Tuesday last when they easily out-scored an under-strength Eadestown who did battle all the way. The early minutes were evenly contested as Eadestown scored first, a Cliona Dowling point and Grace Clifford floated over another soon after but on each occasion Confey broke from the kick out and the Gately sisters finished the moves with smashing goals. Then before Eadestown could regroup Siofra Daly soloed from way out and hit the far corner with a fine shot and when she tried the same immediately after Andrea Jebb went full length to keep it out only to see Confey collect the break and kick their first point. Then newcomer Gillian Behan got in on the act shooting goal number four and Eadestown were in real trouble after just 10 minutes. They did respond to a Deirdre Gately point with a Grace Clifford goal but could not make any impression on the Confey lead. The second quarter saw the teams fairly level in terms of possession and as Confey added points through Deirdre Gately, two, and Aine, one, Eadestown had a point each from Grace Clifford and Aoife Herbert. After Deirdre Gately got Confey off the mark with another point within a minute of the second half Aoife Herbert replied after a long solo run and then Aisling Quinn fired in the second Eadestown goal but Confey, with Paula Doran on for Orla Hogan kept taking the points.  Gillian Behan and Deirdre Gately had one each and after Emma O’Connell strode forward to bang one over for Eadestown Aine Gately hit back with two. Emma O’Connell, now at midfield helped set one up for Grace Clifford and then kick another long one herself. A one/two with Emma McCartney gave Aine Gately the opening for another point before Niamh Quinn burst through and laid on the chance for Deirdre Gately to drive to the roof of the net. The final 10 minutes were all Eadestown pressure but a few poor wides did not help while Aoife McGuinness pulled off 2 fine saves to deny them goals and the last score came from centre back Denise Tierney who drove over from distance. In addition to goalkeeper Aoife McGuinness Cathy Hally, Ciara Hogan and Orla O’Shea stood out in the Confey defence. Niamh Quinn and Rachel Divilly had the better of the midfield battle until the last quarter while Gillian Behan and Siofra Daly did loads of damage from half forward while Deirdre Gately at full forward and the roving Aine Gately were almost unplayable. For Eadestown Andrea Jebb made a string of fine saves as Siobhan Tierney, Grainne Jameson and Emily Carr struggled to stem the tide and Sarah McLoughlin steadied things when moved to defence for the second half. Angela Lyons battled all through at midfield and when joined by Emma O’Connell they took control. Up front Grace Clifford was the leading light with Aoife Herbert, Sue Brosnan and Cliona Dowling also doing well.

Division 2 Naas 1-8 Maynooth 0-6

Naas and Maynooth kicked off their 2012 season without some of their established players of previous years and both clubs gave youth its change to shine. The game didn’t disappoint those present as it was a closely fought contest to the end. Maynooth settled the better and their fast moving forwards caused Naas defence some problems early on and the visitors had 3 points on the board after ten minutes. As the half wore on Naas were getting more of the ball and began to get into the game more. They soon had 3 points of their own from Aine Cummins, Shannon Doheny and Sara Gormley to level matters. Michelle Carey and Sarah Callinan traded frees to leave things all square at the break. The second half saw Naas on top early and despite missing a few chances they had opened a 7-4 lead thanks to points from Sarah Callinan, Aine Cummins and Shannon Doheny. Maynooth struck back with two points to leave the minimum between them. With the game in the balance came the crucial score when Chelsea Crowe put a dangerous ball across the square where it was deflected by a Maynooth defender past her own keeper. Naas had the final score of the night when Chelsea Crowe found an opening to add the last point. Both teams will be happy with the effort their players showed on the night and with the array of young talent on show both will be looking forward to a successful campaign ahead.

Division 3 Robert Emmets 2-13 Clane 2-9

Robert Emmetts ladies were out against Clane in their first league game. This match was end to end football from the first whistle. The game was played at a fast pace with no time been wasted on either sides and the scores going from end to end. Half time saw the sides level. The second half saw the girls put up another fine performance and both teams used their subs well. With 5 minutes to go Robert Emmetts were 5 points up but Clane came back with a goal. The girls from Emmetts were not going to let this game away and finished with 2 fine points to win out. Eimear Dunleavy and Rebecca McCormack played really well in defence for Emmets with Kathyrn O Hara doing really well in goals. Roisin Dunleavy covering every blade of grass and Ciara Lawlor and Mary Hulgraine doing well up front. Scorers for Emmetts were Roisin Dunleavy 0-4,  Ciara Lawlor 0-3, Mary Hulgraine  0-3, Ali Ni Dshublaine 1-1, Tara O Neill 1-0, Sandra Delmer 0-1, Janice Boland 0-1.

Division 3 Suncroft 2-14 Na Fianna 4-12

The first game in the league turned out to be a very exciting hard fought tie between two sides anxious to make a good start to their league campaign.  Suncroft got off to a good start with 3 points from play and a free from Ellen Dowling   Na Fianna replied with 2 points from Mikaela McKenna and 1 each from Tara Higgins and Chloe Smullen.  Suncroft pulled away again with points from Rebecca Johnson and Aoife Connolly and then Na Fianna's Nicole Carroll reacted the quickest to a ball bobbing around in the suncroft gaolmouth to put Na Fianna ahead.  Suncroft came back with 2 points from Dowling and Na Fianna finished the half with a gaol from Aoife Jacob.  Half time score Na Fianna 2 goals 4 points and Suncroft  8 points.  Na Fianna stepped up a gear in the second half and pulled away from their opponents with gaols from Tara Higgins and Chloe Smullen and points from Niamh Quinn, 2 from Aoife Jacob and 5 from Mikaela McKenna.  Suncroft fought hard to get back into the game and had points from Johnson (2), Aiofe Connoly (2) and Trina Duggan (2) and they also scored 2 gaols and at one stage in the second half were only 3 points behind,  but Na Fianna with some excellant defending kept the Suncroft girls out and held on for a 4 point win.  The final score was Na Fianna 4goals 12 points and Suncroft 2goals 14 points.   Best for Suncroft were R Johnson, A Connolly, T Duggan and E Dowling.  Best for Na Fianna were full back Sinead Crowe, R. Murphy, N Carroll, A Jacob, T. Higgins, M McKenna and Niamh Quinn who was back playing after a long lay off and Emily Jacob who was also returning to the game after being out for a while.  A good win for Na Fianna.

Division 4 Athy 3-9 Monasterevin 5-12

Athy played host to Monasterevin in the opening game of the Div 4 league which saw Monasterevin take the points on a final scoreline of 5-12 to 3-09. Monasterevin opened the scoring after 3 minutes which saw the Athy defense left wide open as Simone Gilbert blasted the ball to the back of the net.  She followed this with a point on 8 minutes. The salvation for Athy came on 13 minutes when, goalkeeper, Rachel Fennin, saved a penalty. Athy tagged on points from Michaela Hubbock, Emer Farrell & Orlaith moran & then a goal from Melissa Nolan on 20 minutes. This was quickly cancelled out by yet another goal from Monasterevin on 22 minutes. Emer Farrell for Athy then scored a goal followed by another Monasterevin goal. It was all Monasterevin from then on & on 27 mins they blazed wide of the Athy goal. They quickly corrected this on the 30 minute mark & another goal for the visitors was registered. Athy trailed at the half time by 4-07 to 2-03. Monasterevin continued the scoring in the 2nd half without reply, scoring 1-02 after just 11 minutes of the restart.  Things could have been a lot worse for Athy, had it not been for the sheer defensive power of Aisling Delahunt, who cleared the ball off the line, in what was a clear goal chance for the visitors. Niamh Mulhall for Athy was also very unluckly not to have converted her goal opportunity, which on this occasion, saw the upright win out. A late Aoibhinn Kelly goal for Athy was just reward for the possession football that Athy dominated in the 2nd half.  The game finished on a scoreline of 5-12 to 3-09.

Division 4 Round Towers 2-7 Athgarvan 6-16

Athgarvan got their league campaign off to a flying start with a hard fought but ultimately convincing win away to Round Towers. The opening stages were evenly balanced with the scores tied at 2-3 apiece after fifteen minutes. However, Athgarvan got well on top in the final ten minutes of the half after a pinpoint pass from Lorraine Whyte sent Tracy Noone clean through for a goal, the first period finishing with Athgarvan ahead by 4-9 to 2-5. The second half saw the Athgarvan back line of Sinead Geraghty, Eimear McBride and Kate Leahy snuffing out any goal scoring threat while half backs Aisling Lambe and Michelle Doyle worked tirelessly to break up the Towers attacks. With Tracy Noone in unstoppable form and Ber Coffey just shading Rachel Burke for the player of the game accolade amongst the dominant forward line, Athgarvan prevailed by 6-16 to 2-7 although a couple of fine saves were needed from Louise Keatley in the dying minutes as Round Towers kept trying to the end. Scorers for Athgarvan were Tracy Noone (3-5), Rachel Burke (2-4), Ciara Byrne (1-1) including the best point of the game, Ber Coffey (0-3), Gillian Lynch (0-2) and Lorraine Whyte (0-1).

Division 5 Prosperous 1-2 Kildangan Nurney 4-12

Kildangan/Nurney started the league with an impressive win away to Prosperous. The travelling team started well with a goal from Laura Furlong. Prosperous responded quickly with a goal the far end. Kildangan/Nurney worked hard in the first time leading on a scoreline of 3-3 to 1-1 at half time. The second half resumed with Kildangan/Nurney pushing ahead with points from Ciara Merrins, Kate Scully, Helen Sexton and Katie Fullam among others. Phillipa Cains, Tracey Rowe and Orla Kelly played superb throughout in the backline. The Kildangan/Nurney side finished the game with a well worked goal, scored by corner back Caroline Sexton. Final score Kildangan/Nurney 4-12 Prosperous 1-2. Kildangan/Nurney team; Karen Lawless, Caroline Sexton, Phillipa Cains, Tracey Rowe, Helen Thackaberry, Orla Kelly, Helen Sexton, Clare Reilly, Katie Fullam, Lorna Merrins, Kate Scully, Laura Furlong, Ciara Merrins, Sophie Fleming, Fidelma Dowdall.

Division 5 Milltown 1-4 Castledermot 2-9

Having been relegated last year, Castledermot travelled to play a very young Milltown side. The away side took an early lead and built on that throughout the game. Milltown never gave up and battled hard all over the field. Scorers for Castledermot: Niamh Byrne 1-3, Louise Kirwan 1-0, Leah Byrne 0-2,  Michaela Nolan 0-2,  Sarah Farrell 0-1, Betsy Kiowski 0-1. Best for Milltown were Nicola Sweeney, Sarah Kavanagh, Nimah Byrne and Katie Phelan.

Minor A final Balyna 3-6 St. Laurence’s 1-6

Balyna minor ladies footballers regained the LGFA Minor A title with a deserved win over 2011 champions St. Laurence’s. In a close and tightly contested game, where both defences prevailed, it was Balyna who had the greater scoring threat with six of their players getting on the score sheet. Balyna opened the scoring with an early goal from Shauna Farrell and a point from Shauna O Donoghue. It took the Lady Larries 15 minutes to register their first score, a point from Emer Fogarty, but the momentum stayed with Balyna where Ruth Bergin scored two points from frees followed by an excellent point from play from Rachel Cribbin.  Kim Mackey pointed from a free in the 27th minute to leave the half time score, Balyna 1-4   St. Laurence’s 0-2. The second half started with a bang for St. Laurence’s.  Within five minutes they had levelled the scores at 1-4 each. Full forward, Jean Miley, scored an early point when isolated one on one with the Balyna full back and quickly followed up with a goal when a similar early delivery helped her round the full back again and shoot to the net. Melissa O Neill scored the equaliser with a fine point from distance. However, the Lady Larries failed to deliver another early pass to their full forward line and only scored another two points for the remaining twenty minutes of the game. From there the Balyna girls took control of the middle of the field and worked the ball forward to score two great goals from Erica Burke and a Shauna Farrell, and a pointed free from Ruth Bergin. Sub Georgia Dempsey pushed Balyna over the line with a fine point from play. While both sides had plenty of chances to score in the second half, Balyna were deserved winners on the day. The final score was Balyna 3-6   St. Laurence’s 1-6. Balyna team - Orna Lowrey,  Rachel Cormican, Ellen Morgan, Noelle Kelly, Audrey Flynn, Effithea Byrne, Ciara O' Donoghue, Shauna O' Donoghue, Rachel Ward, Elaina Burke, Erica Burke, Rachel Cribbin, Shauna Farrell, Ruth Bergin, Tory Ward, Georga Demspey, Anna Mc Crosson, Carol Hurley, Louise Keogh, Amy Flanagan.

St. Laurence’s team - Vanessa Dempsey, Ciara Marron, Niamh Lawler, Sarah O Neill, Myra O Reilly, Brid Farrell, Rebecca O Keefe, Allison Keatley, Emer Fogarty, Kim Mackey, Aoife Nolan, Jean Miley, Melissa O Neill, Louise Farrell, Clodagh Glynn, Aisling Woods, Sinead Miley, Derbhaile Byrne & Aine Dunne.

Minor B final Eadestown 5-7 Leixlip 1-6

Eadestown won their first Minor Championship last Saturday in Hawkfield with a comprehensive win over a gallant young Leixlip team. Now Eadestown did have a big part in the 2001 & 2003 Nás/Baile Eide wins but this win was the Club’s first solo Minor Title. They got a great start as, having to face the strong biting cold wind in the first half, their Captain Grace Clifford, taking an astute Nicole Mooney pass, blasted high to the net after 6 minutes. Leixlip did have plenty of possession but wasted a number of chances but they replied instantly to that opening score as Naimot Akinde won the kick out and sent Kayleigh Farrell scampering away for a point. Grace Clifford repaid Nicole Mooney for the earlier pass and Nicole popped it over the bar. Then came a break, as a high ball into the Leixlip square was not claimed by the defenders, full forward Aisling Quinn collected the loose ball and drove in the second Eadestown goal. Leixlip tried hard to get back into the game with Tara Hallinan and Naimot Akinde driving winning possession but the forward missed a few more chances and were made to pay when Sinead Harney who had just been introduced at wing forward ran on to a pass, stepped past a defender and drove over another point. Tara Hallinan and Kayleigh Farrell combined just before the break to allow Ellie Christie the chance and Ellie, just moved up to the front line, duly pointed but 2 goals down and with facing the wind in the second half it looked a tall order for Leixlip. Turning over to play with wind advantage Eadestown were hit for a point straight from the restart as Leixlip showed their intention to fight on. Tara Hallinan, having won the throw-up, was on the end of a good move and kicked a good point. Straight from the kick out Tara was on the end of a Kayleigh Farrell pass and was clean through. Eadestown goalkeeper Ruth Downey advanced and got a knee to the shot and deflected it away for a fruitless “45”. Leixlip still drove forward and when Kayleigh Farrell got through she was bowled over in the small square and Referee Gavin Duane had an easy call for a penalty. Midfielder Naimot Akinde drove the spot-kick low and hard to the left corner and now there was only 2 points between the sides. With the game there to be won it was Eadestown Captain Grace Clifford who stepped up to the mark and showed just why she is a County Senior player. She drove over 2 points in quick succession and after Kayleigh Farrell pointed a Leixlip free Grace found Cora Dempsey with a long ball and when the corner forward drove the ball across Aisling Quinn out-fielded  two defenders and drove in goal number 3. Grace Clifford then finished the game as a contest. First she kicked over a long range point and the she collected the ball in midfield and soloed in for her second goal. Sinead Harney scored the fifth Eadestown goal when she ran on to an Anna Harney pass and found the roof of the net. Aisling Quinn added a point before Leixlip responded with a brace of points, the first from Kayleigh Farrell when placed by Rachida Chemaou and the second by Ellie Christie from point blank range. Anna Harney closed the scoring with a fine point and all that remained was for County Board Chairperson Arthur Corrigan to present the Cup and how fitting it was that the recipient was by far the best player on the pitch. Grace Clifford led her team by example, helping out in defence, lording the midfield and finishing as the top scorer. Goalkeeper Ruth Downey, Jane Hennessy and the Jameson sisters Grainne and Caoimhe were the stars in defence; County Minor Niamh Tuohy was the perfect midfield foil for Grace Clifford while Nicole Mooney, Aisling Quinn and Sinead Harney excelled in attack. While Leixlip will be disappointed they can take solace from the fact that 13 of their starters will be minors next year and excellent goalkeeper Mairead Dolan has 4 more years to go. Mairead played very well, with her handling immaculate and she advanced to cut out a number of dangerous situations including one great block on the ever dangerous Aisling Quinn and all that after playing for the Kildare Under 14 team in a Leinster Championship game just 2 hours earlier. Defenders Aoife Masterson, Erin Kennedy and Grainne Lyons did well as did Shannon Holland when re-sited at wing back. Tara Hallinan and Naimot Akinde fought hard at midfield and in attack, Kayleigh Farrell, Amy McGraine and Michelle Carvallo were most dangerous.

The game resume at a hectic pace and Na Fianna were out of the blocks first and scored a point; extending their lead but Naas clawed back another point . Na Fianna continued to exert pressure but the Naas defence stood firmly led by their goalkeeper Amy Creaton who saved a certain goal with a fine save .She was ably assisted by the fullback Aisling Kelly and the two corner forwards Aisling Moloney and Kelly Perkins who defended tenaciously while the substitute Hannah Hevernan contributed very well when she entered the fray .Laura Naughton ,wing back, showed great athleticism while Aisling Gralton, centre back, gathered a lot of ball and Anna Begley intercepted many passes and launched many a Naas attack Their half forwards continued to string some good passing movements together resulting in a goal from Niamh Bergin which was shortly followed by another goal from the boot of Shauna Weldon. McKenna leads the way as U16 girls defeat Wexford

U16 Leinster championship Wexford 3-6 Kildare 2-14
Not to be outdone by their U14 county team, the Kildare U16s also secured a fine win over Wexford in Marshalstown on Easter Saturday. The home side opened their scoring with the opening minutes with a goal. Three minutes later, Kildare had worked the ball back up the field and captain Mikaela McKenna blasted a ball past Katie Lawlor to equalise the sides. Wexford continues to pile on the pressure and found themselves in on goal with four minutes gone but Kildare keeper Rochelle Kane came to the rescue pulling off an excellent save. This spurted on Kildare and they added three unanswered points through Rebecca Houlihane (0-1) and McKenna (0-2). Wexford were not phased by Kildares dominance and with 19 minutes played, Chloe Fox scored Wexfords second goal to equalise the sides. Mikaela McKenna was in fine form for the lilywhites and caused the Wexford defence a lot of damage. She added two further points for her side before Ellen Dowling finished the scoring of the half with a well taken point. Half time score Wexford 2-1 Kildare 1-6. Wexford opened the scoring of the half with a minute of play. This was quickly followed with an Ellen Dowling point. Nine minutes into the second half, Wexford were awarded a penalty following a foot block. Chloe Fox gave the keeper no chance and scored a great goal from the spot. This put Wexford 2 points ahead and Aoife Ryan stretched that to 3 points a minute later. Houlihane narrowed the gap back to 2 points with ten minutes played. The home side were now starting to show great confidence and with 18 minutes played had stretched their lead back to 3 points. McKenna led the way for Kildare in the closing stages of the game and contributed a great supply of ball to the Kildare forwards. Kildares second goal came from Rebecca Houlihane following a rebound from the crossbar from a McKenna shot. Kildare ran out five point winners in the end. U14 girls get first Leinster championship win 2012

U14 Leinster championship Wexford 2-10 Kildare 1-20
The Kildare U14 team got their first win in their Leinster championship campaign on Easter Saturday with a seven point victory over Wexford. It was the Wexford corner forward Annie Dempsey who got the scoring underway in Marshalstown with a goal in the opening seconds of the game. Kildare were still trying to settle into the game and with two minutes played, Ciara Wheeler opened the scoring for the lilywhites after linking up with Megan Grufferty from a free. Kildare captain Aisling O’Connor popped over Kildares second point following a great spell of play involving Wheeler and Kellie Fisher. Kildare began to dominate the field and looked very impressive on the attack. Louise Scully added a further two points for her side before Wexford secured their second score of the game on 8 minutes. With 10 minutes gone, Kildare full forward Niamh Bergin fisted the ball over the bar. Kildare were very much on top at this stage and Scully and Wheeler added a point each. With 15 minutes on the clock, Ciara Ryan added Wexfords second point following severe pressure from the Kildare defence. A minute later, Ellie O’Toole blazed over the bar for a great Kildare point. Wheeler added another 2 points before the break. Wexford finished the strongest scoring 3 unanswered points. Half time score Wexford 1-5 Kildare 0-10. Wexford once again opened the scoring of the half with a good point. Molly Price got her name on the score sheet with a well taken point and always caused a threat to the Wexford defence. Any attempt Wexford made to get back into the game, Kildare added to the scoreline. Molly Price added her second point 18 minutes into the second half. A minute later Kilcullens Ellie Quinn put her boot to the ball in a goal mouth scramble and buried it past Brid Byrne in the Wexford goals. This put Kildare four points ahead. Wexford came bursting up the field and within a minute had the ball in the back of the Kildare net. Kildare continued to put pressure on the Wexford defence and were rewarded with 2 fine scores from Louise Scully and Niamh Bergin. The Naas full forward was unlucky to have her goal chance cleared off the line. Kildare finished out the game the strongest and outscored the home side 0-6 to 0-2 in the final ten minutes of the game. This was a cracking game of football with two competitive skilful teams. Best for Kildare were Miah Phelan in the full back line, Sabrina Kennedy and Aine Nash cut out so many Wexford attacks. Ciara Wheeler and Aisling O’Connor worked tirelessly in the middle. The half forward line of Molly Price, Megan Grufferty and Kellie Fisher battled hard and instigated numerous attacks. Louise Scully had a fine game for Kildare in the corner forward position. The Kildare team was Mairead Dolan (Leixlip), Bronagh Kearney (Maynooth), Miah Phelan (St Laurences), Avril Fitzpatrick (St Laurences), Niamh Dunne (Na Fianna), Sabrina Kennedy (Kildangan Nurney), Aine Nash (Monasterevin), Ciara Wheeler (St Laurences) 0-6 (1 f), Aisling O’Connor (Kilcock) 0-2, Molly Price (Sarsfields) 0-2, Megan Grufferty (St Laurences) 0-2, Kellie Fisher (Sarsfields), Ellie O Toole (Kilcullen) 0-1, Niamh Bergin (Naas) 0-2, Louise Scully (Kildangan Nurney) 0-5 (2 f). Kildare ladies relegated to Division 2

Monaghan 0-18  Kildare 0-8

Monaghan went into Sunday's game assured of a semi final spot, whereas Kildare needed a win to stand a chance of avoiding relegation. With a semi final position safe there was a changed Monaghan line out from previous games. It was Monaghan who started the livlier and Catriona Mc Connell opened the scoring of the day firing over a point with less than a minute of the game gone. Ciara Mc Anespie had a golden opportunity of a goal soon after but her shot was well saved by Kildare keeper Mary Hulgraine. Kildare defence was under immense pressure in the opening quarter and 3points in succession all from frees from Niamh Kindlon and a point from Ciara Mc Anespie put Monaghan 5 points clear. It took a free converted by Eimear Fogarty to get Kildare off the mark on the 12 minute mark. Monaghan's pressure continued and 2 more goal opportunities went astray. Aoife McAnespie's shot on goal was well saved by Mary Hulgraine and a blistering shot from Catriona Mc Connell richocheted off the post. Kildare soaked up the pressure and mounted an attack of their own. They were rewarded with a point once again from a free converted by Eimear Fogarty, but Natasha Mohan kept Monaghan 4 clear with a point for the home side. Kildare then had a great opportunity for goal only to see their attempt blocked on the line. Two points in succession for Monaghan, one from Cora Courtney and the other from Catriona Mc Connell put 6 between the sides but Kildare immediately responded with 2 points from midfielder Ash Holton and half forward Maria Moolick, who was coming more into the game for the Lilywhites. With just 4 points now between the sides it looked like Kildare had weathered the storm but just on the stroke of half time Aoife Mc Anespie found Natasha Mohan who fired over the bar to put Monaghan 5 ahead going into the break. Half time score   Monaghan 0-9   Kildare 0-4. Kildare were probably the happier going in at the break, because for all of Monaghan's dominance in the opening half, kildare where still in the game. Monaghan introduced Laura Mc Eneaney and Therese Mc Nally
at half time and like the opening minutes of the first half, they mounted serious pressure on the Kildare defence. Aoife Mc Anespie opened the scoring of the second half when after a surging run forward she fisted over the bar. She added her second point of the day not long after having received a great ball from Catriona Mc Connell. Ciara Mc Anespie added another to put Monaghan 8 clear with only 6 minutes of the second half gone. Kildare also introduced a number of subs but it was still all Monaghan and substitute Laura Mc Eneaney soon got her name on the scoresheet with 2 points in succession to put Monaghan 10 clear after the opening quarter. Kildare's first score of the half came from a free converted by Eimear Fogarty but 3 further points from Monaghan, one from Catriona Mc Connell, one from Amanda Casey and another from Laura Mc Eneaney stretched Monaghan's lead to 12. It was an uphill task for Kildare now but they didn't give up and
they continued to take the game to Monaghan. Monaghan introduced Ciara Duffy and Barbara Ward for the last quarter but it was Kildare who finished the scoring of the game with 2 points, one from Eimer Fogarty, the other from her midfield partner Ash Holton to leave 10 points between the sides at the end.
