U16s win Leinster title

Leinster U16B Leinster final Kildare 4-7 Wexford 2-8

By Donal Fitzpatrick

On a glorious afternoon in brilliant sunshine, Kildare and Wexford faced each other to contest the U16B Leinster final in Tinryland, Co Carlow. A slight cross wind blew across the pitch but it didn’t favour either team, the game itself was played at a high tempo and a very sporting manner. Full credit must be giving to both sets of managers and mentors for having the girls prepared well and in great shape and fully fit for this game. Kildare were 1st on the score board with a fine point from midfielder Chanice Corcoran, as the game progressed both teams defences were on top clearing any danger that came its way. So from defence comes attack and Wexfords Ciara Rossiter scored her teams 1st point and soon followed it by running through the Kildare back line of Emma Lyons, Orla Moran, Sara O Neill, Daire Smyth, Niamh Lawlor and Rachel Cribben giving the Kildare keeper Rochelle Kane no chance to get in a block as the ball crashed to back of the net. Wexfords Aoife Ryan who was a constant thorn in Kildares back line all day scored the next point to put Wexford 4pts up. Kildares keeper Kane was very clever with her kick outs all during the game by kicking the ball long short and out to the wings, from this Kildare worked the ball well through the midfield of Chanice Corcoran and Emma Wheeler to link up well with forwards Ellen Dowling to score Kildares 2nd point. Kildare were on the up now and the forwards Derbhaile Byrne, Ellen Dowling, Niamh Mulhall, Rachel Reidy, Mikaela McKenna and Rebecca Houlihane were giving Wexford backs major problems with their movement off the ball and distribution resulting in a goal from Derbhaile Byrne as her initial shot came off the upright and back into play and during the scramble in Wexford goal mouth she was able to squeeze the ball past Wexford keeper Katie Lawlor. Kildare followed this up with 2 more points from Dowling and McKenna. Not to be out done by her forwards up came Rachel Cribben looking to get on the score board and she bagged herself a goal and Kildares second  to the satisfaction of the crowd as they cheered on as the ball went into the net. This followed with another point from Dowling to give Kildare a 6 point lead. Wexford to their credit battled on and scored 3 pts before the break, 1 from Julianne O Brien and 2 from Aoife Ryan, leaving little between the teams at half time, Kildare 2.05 Wexford 1.05. Kildare introduced 2 subs Tara Hallinan for Rebecca Houlihane and Grainne Lyons for Rachel Reidy. Wexford started the 2nd half as they finished the 1st and were rewarded after some intense pressure and good build up play, Ryan blasted the ball to the top corner of the net giving Kane nothing but air to flap at. Scores were level 2.05 to 2.05- game on. Straight from the kick out Kildare worked the ball up the field and was played into Ellen Dowling who cooly slotted home Kildares 3rd goal. Wexford replied with a point from Ryan. There was a lull in the game at this stage and both teams squandered possession and scoring opportunities. All was not lost though as up stepped Niamh Mulhall to slice her way through Wexford defence and one on one with the keeper advancing with a deft little touch she lobbed the Wexford keeper and the ball rolled into the empty net to a loud cheer from the Kildare supporters. From the resulting kick out Mulhall won breaking ball and fired over her 2nd score putting Kildare into a 6pt lead again. Wexford had their purple patch now and launched attack after attack on the Kildare goal and came away with 2pts from Ryan, Kildare nerves were starting to show as the final whistle was nearing with only 4pts between the teams Wexford broke through the middle of the Kildare back line and with a goal looking certain from Rossiter, Kildares Grainne Lyons made a great tackle dispossessing the advancing Wexford player, as a result the ball was played up field and to the relief of the Kildare supporters Derbhaile Byrne scored a great point to leave 5 points between teams. Best for Kildare were Ellen Dowling, Niamh Mulhall and Derbhaile Byrne.  Well done to Mikaela McKenna from Na Fianna who captained the team and also congrats to Niamh Mulhall from Athy who was given the player of the match award.

Kildares good performance not enough to overturn the Dubs

TG4 Leinster Senior championship Kildare 2-4 Dublin 1-14

By Jackie Whelan

Dublin were the opposition for Kildares opener in the Leinster senior preliminary round. It was the first ten minutes that Kildare needed to keep the scoring of their opposition to a minimum as it was during this time that the Dubs had clocked up some high scores in previous games. Although Dublin scored the three opening scores of the game, Kildare put severe pressure on their attacking forwards. Kildare got off the mark with 17 minutes played through Eimear Fogarty after Moolick won a high ball. Fogarty added her second from a well take free a few minutes later. Catherine O'Malley was introduced early on in the half for Roisin Byrne. Olivia Leonard added a fourth for Dublin before Aine Gately added a third lilywhite point from a free. Just when Kildare were coming more and more in to the game with some good runs up the field, Niamh McEvoy was on hand to bury the ball past Mary Hulgraine in the Kildare goals. A few minutes later, Fogarty shot a powerful shot which hit off the bar and rebounded to a waiting O'Malley but All star keeper O'Connor stopped anything crossing the line. Fay snatched another point for the Dubs before the break. Half time score Kildare 0-3 Dublin 1-5. Kildare needed to get the second half off to a good start but it was the visitors who got the opening three points through McEvoy, Aherne and McGuinness. Kildare management acted fast and before long Donna Berry and Siobhan Hurley were introduced for O'Malley and Michelle Carey. Kildare began to settle again to the task on hand and Moolick who was a thorn in the Dublin defence scored a great point quickly followed by an Aine Gately goal which she tucked away on the rebound. Brianne Leahy was sin binned for a tackle which the ref considered a high one and during her absence, Dublin racked up 5 points. The Kildare girls never gave up and battled right up to the end. Mary Hulgraine came off her line to put away a penalty late in the game to bring the deficit back to 7 points. Kildare will rue missed goal chances as they would have made the game much closer. The huge positive for Kildare is that they competed with their neighbours which hadnt happened in previous games. The reappearance of familiar faces, in particular Brianne Leahy, boosted the entire outfit. The introduction of Erica Burke along with Fogarty shows the future of Kildare ladies football. The girls face a five week wait now before their qualifier game. Best for Kildare were Kiri Lowry, Aisling Savage, Aisling Holton and Moolick who played a true captains role. Kildare scorers came from Aine Gately 1-1, Mary Hulgraine 1-0 (pen), Eimear Fogarty 0-2 (1 f) and Maria Moolick 0-1. Dublin scorers came from Sinead Aherne 0-5, Niamh McEvoy 1-2, Amy McGuinness 0-2, Olivia Leonard 0-2, Ciara Murphy 0-1, Gemma Fay 0-1 and Fiona Hudson 0-1.

Leinster senior ladies championship - Kildare v Dublin

Sun 24th June Kildare v Dublin in Hawkfield at 3pm

Kildare face the almighty task of a home opener in the Leinster championship against the Dubs. Preparation has gone very well and the work done by John Divilly, David Hughes and Mark Hogarty has really benefited the players. The team have played four challenge games over the last few weeks losing out to Mayo and Meath but defeated Longford and Leitrim. Performances have been getting better in every game. Division 1 Kildangan Nurney 4-11 Leixlip 2-8
Kildangan Nurney Under 14's secured a Division 1 Final place with great win against Leixlip on Thursday evening. Kildangan Nurney were first out of the traps with a Louise Scully point, and continued in this vein for the remainder of the first period. Goals by Aine Merrins and Louise Scully and points by Sabrina Kennedy, Louise Scully and Lauren Kelly resulted in a 2:08 to 0:01 half time lead for Kildangan Nurney. Leixlip were a changed team in the second half, regsitering the first two points to begin to claw back their huge deficit. Kildangan Nurney fought back through a great individual Aine Merrins goal, where she rounded a number of defenders and shot past the Leixlip keeper. Louise Scully blazed up the field and added a second goal minutes later. In fairness to Leixlip they were keeping in touch in the second half, led by their Midfielder Sorcha Sunderland who scored a cracking goal midway through the second half. Indeed if they had played the first with the same tenacity the result could very well have been different, as Aine Fitzmaurice added a second goal to their second half tally with minutes remaining. However, although scoring 2:07 in the second period, there was just too big a gap to bridge, as Kildangan Nurney were keeping the scoreboard ticking over with points by Sabrina Kennedy, Lauren Kelly and Louise Scully. Kildangan Nurney were worthy winners with a seven point margin 4:11 to 2:08.They go on to face St Laurences in the Division 1 final, the third time these teams will meet in a Division 1 final in as many years.  Best for Leixlip were the aforementioned Aine Fitzmaurice and Sorcha Sunderland, Sorcha Tiernan, Racida Chemiaou and goalkeeper Mairead Dolan. In a great team effort, best for Kildangan Nurney were defenders Orla O'Donovan and Emily Cains, MIdfielder Sabrina Kennedy and up front Lauren Kelly, Louise Scully and Aine Merrins.

Div 4 Ballymore 1-6 Athy 1-18

Ballymore 1 – 6 Athy 1 – 18
Ballymore faced Athy on the 15th of May at home. Athy won the toss and had a strong wind in the first half, Athy quickly took advantage of the wind notched up a couple points on the score board. Athy did not have it easy though, heroic efforts from Stacey Balfe in full back and Aoife O’Toole in goals kept Ballymore in contention. Aoife O’Toole made the save of the league within the first 5 minutes denying Athy a sure fire goal. The rest of the backs took the lead of the goalkeeper and continually made block after block with every body part imaginable. Despite the great work being done, Ballymore struggled to keep Athy’s sharp shooters at bay. Eventually Ballymore put two points on the board courtesy of Aisling Hubbard and Lesley Tutty. As half time was called, Athy’s confidence was high with 10 points etched on the scorecard and Ballymore had a mountain to climb. In the second half Ballymore came out fighting, with the wind at their backs they managed to claw back a few scores. A goal from Aisling Hubbard, helped in by Lesley Tutty saw a new wave of confidence go through the team. Athy answered back and eventually managed to put the ball past Aoife O’Toole. Ballymore’s new found tempo began to dwindle and Athy maximised on this with several unanswered points.

Kildare U16s secure Leinster final spot

U16 Leinster championship Kildare 4-16 Meath 5-7
This game was played in excellent conditions in Sarsfields GAA. Kildare started the game at a lightening pace, and within the first five minutes, Niamh Mulhall had the ball in the back of the Meath net for the first of four Kildare goals. This was quickly followed by a point from Ellen Dowling and a second Kildare goal, this time from Mikaela Mc Kenna. Orla Moran from Athy was brought into the game to replace Derbhaile Byrne who was brought off after a knee injury. Moran had an immediate effect, and kicked a fine point upon her entrance. This was followed by points from Mikaela Mc Kenna, Niamh Mulhall and two from Ellen Dowling. Meath had no answer to this Kildare dominance. Daire Smyth performed well in the middle of the field, along with Shauna Kendrick and Chanice Corcoran. Meath responded with two good points from Grace Malone and Stacey Grimes. Mc Kenna from Kildare responded with her second goal. Meath were quick to reply to this, and following a fine exchange of passes stuck the ball over the bar for their third point of the game by Ellie Lane. Kildare led at half time on a scoreline of 3-7 to 0-3. Meath emerged from the half-time break and began the second half at a blistering pace, scoring 2-3 within the first twelve minutes; goals by Aoife Flatterty and Alicia Curtis, and some fine points by Kellie Harris and Stacey Grimes gave Meath the determination that they needed to get back into the game. Kildare responded well and kept the scoreboard ticking over with scores from Mikaela Mc Kenna, Niamh Mulhall and Ellen Dowling once again. Meath kept in touch with a further point from Kellie Harris and a goal in the 25th minute from Sarah O' Brien. This set the game on knife edge for the final five minutes. In the 28th minute Meath were awarded a penalty, which they duly stuck in the back of the Kildare net. However, Kildare responded excellently and Mikaela Mc Kenna scored her third goal of the game. This was followed by a point from Ellen Dowling to seal the Kildare victory, and a place in the u16 B Championship final against Wexford on the 7th July.  Special mention must go to Rachel Cribben who performed excellently throughout the game with a player of the match performance; Emma Wheeler, Sarah O' Neill and Ellen Dowling also put in some fine performances, along with Mikaela Mc Kenna who finished on a personal tally of 3-5. Kildare Scorers: Mikaela Mc Kenna 3-5, Ellen Dowling 0-5, Niamh Mulhall 1-2, Orla Moran 0-3, Shauna Kendrick 0-1.
